The Minnesotans United for All Families campaign was formed in the summer of 2011 to fight the 2012 ballot referendum that would have added a ban on marriage for same-sex couples to Minnesota's constitution.
The staff, volunteers, and supporters of Minnesotans United won that referendum, making Minnesota the first state to decisively defeat a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage at the ballot box.
In May 2013, the Minnesota Legislature responded by legalizing marriage equality for same-sex couples, making Minnesota the 12th state to do so.
The above graphic, created to commemorate passage of the new law in the summer of 2013, references the 1983 song "Love Is The Law" by The Suburbs.
As of 2026, love is still the law in Minnesota and all the United States.
